ST3485, ST3232: interfaces and transceivers family which includes RS-232, RS-422, RS-423, and RS-485
The ST3485EB/EC/EI/EIY device is ±15 kV ESD protected, 3.3 V low power transceiver for RS- 485 and RS-422 communications. The device contains one driver and one receiver in half duplex configuration.
The ST3485E device transmits and receives at a guaranteed data rate of at least 12 Mbps.
All transmitter outputs and receiver inputs are protected to ±15 kV IEC 61000-4-2 air discharge.
The driver is short-circuit current limited and is protected against excessive power dissipation by thermal shutdown circuitry that places the driver outputs into a high impedance state.
The ST3232B and ST3232C devices are 3 V powered EIA/TIA-232 and V.28/V.24 communication interfaces with low power requirements and high data-rate capabilities.
These devices have a proprietary low dropout transmitter output stage providing true RS-232 performance from 3 to 5.5 V supplies. The devices require only four small 0.1 mF standard external capacitors for operation from a 3 V supply.

They usually contain one driver and one receiver in a half-duplex configuration. Each driver output and receiver input is protected against electrostatic discharge up to ±15 Kv and has no latch-up. These transceivers operate with a 5 V supply and draw a very-low supply current when unloaded or fully loaded but with disabled drivers.
A SERCOS interface controller for industrial control systems enables real-time communication via optical fiber rings, RS-485 rings, and RS-485 buses.
